Excitons in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes--- Effects of e-e interaction & Similarities with pi-Conjugated Polymers

Abstract: Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted extensive research activities due to their remarkable material properties and huge application potentials. Since SWCNT is one form of pure carbon materials, initially, researchers use tight-binding model to characterize the its property, i.e., electron-electron interaction is not considered. This talk will walk through the history in SWCNT basic research where the importance of e-e interaction is established. The property of SWCNTs bear strong similarity with pi-conjugated polymers, we discuss the deep reason under it. Recent experiments of this strong e-e interaction in metallic SWCNT is also discussed.
