报告题目: A Rosetta Stone for Gauge/Gravity Duality

报告摘要:We have two remarkable descriptions of nature. Our current understanding of gravity, summarized in Einstein's theory of general relativity claims that there is no such thing as a gravitational force. The illusion of gravitational attraction is the result of a curved spacetime manifold. Our understanding of the remaining three forces in nature is in terms of the exchange of force carrying particles in quantum field theory. General Relativity is used to describe phenomena at galactic and cosmological length scales, while quantum field theory is used to describe atomic and subatomic length scales. While these two theories are remarkably successful in their respective domains of validity, there is at present no way to unify them into a single consistent framework. In this talk we will review this problem and sketch recent ideas that suggest its resolution.

-1999 年美国布朗(Brown)大学博士后;1999年以来一直担任金山大学物理系教授;1999 年被授予表现优异才能的年轻研究人员,获得 NRF(国家研究基金会)总裁奖;2001 年获得南非物理学会银奖勋章(该奖授予35岁以下在物理学研究、教育、技术和工业发展方面取得优异成就的年轻物理学家);2007年7月荣获基础物理和弦理论领域的首席NRF科学家,为期 5 年;2016年10月成为南非科学院院士。
