Peierls' argument states that one-dimensional systems with short-range interactions cannot undergo thermal phase transitions marked by local order parameters. In this talk, we will revisit this by employing a non-local order parameter. We will discuss a topological phase transition at finite temperatures within the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subjected to repulsive Hubbard interactions. This transition is driven by the proliferation of domain walls, created by interactions and activated by thermal fluctuations. We interpret this phenomenon as the loss of a topologically protected edge mode, clearly defined in the thermodynamic limit. If time permits, I will briefly discuss how this kind of mixed-state topological phase in two dimensions connects to the decoding phase transition in the toric code.
